Kier Property has been selected as preferred bidder to develop a £240m mixed-use scheme in Watford, Hertfordshire.
The firm beat John Laing for the Watford Health Campus contract to develop the 65-acre site on the Cardiff Road industrial estate.
Plans for the 375,000 sq ft project comprise 650 homes, new hospital facilities and a 550-space car park.
Kier was selected by the Health Campus Partnership joint partnership, which is made up of Watford borough council, West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust and Watford Football Club.
Financial and legal agreements are expected to be finalised by the end of the year, with construction starting in January 2014. The whole scheme is due for completion in 2021.
Nigel Turner, Kier Property’s managing director, said: “We have worked closely with the Health Campus partners to understand their vision and aspirations for the Health Campus and the area overall. We believe our proposal will deliver the transformation that the partnership is looking for and we are now very excited to get started.”
Jan Filochowski, chief executive of West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust, added: “The land around the hospital and the slope of the site has been challenging when trying to piece together the Health Campus jigsaw. The scheme allows parts of the hospital to decant while other parts are built.”
