400-bed student digs for Bristol

Plans to redevelop the former Bristol Magistrates Court on Nelson Street into a 348-bed student accommodation scheme have been recommended for approval.

Planning officers at Bristol city council have backed proposals by student housing developer Watkin Jones Group to convert the court into student housing.

Proposals also comprise almost 3,500 sq ft of commercial space at ground level.

The latest plans, which will be heard on 24 April, replace previously consented proposals for a 161-room hotel and a 132-bed student housing scheme.

Subject to planning, construction is expected to complete in 2015.

At the same Bristol planning meeting, proposals by Urban Start for a 52-bed student accommodation project at the former Maskreys shop on Whiteladies Road have also been recommended for consent.
