Hammerson has confirmed that its extension of Silverburn shopping centre in Glasgow will be anchored by a 50,000 sq ft 14-screen Cineworld cinema.

In addition to the new cinema, the development will include nine new restaurants, Gala Bingo, additional shops and upgraded public realm. Work on the extension begins later this year, with the restaurants opening in autumn 2014.

Hammerson and its joint venture partner, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, received planning permission for the £20m scheme earlier this year. It will open in spring 2015.

Cineworld currently has seven cinemas in Scotland and accounts for 37% of admissions.

Martin Plocica, director shopping centres for Hammerson, said: “Pressing the button on delivering this leisure-based scheme is great news for Silverburn. Anchored by Cineworld, the extension reinforces Silverburn’s regional presence. We will be offering our customers an exciting line up of high-quality leisure uses that complements perfectly our extensive, well-established fashion and lifestyle shopping.”

Steve Wiener, chief executive of Cine UK, added: “We want to be the major cinema brand in Scotland, and Silverburn allows us to achieve that objective in the Glasgow region.

“The centre attracts a significant number of cinema going consumers, who are drawn to the centre due to its quality, offer and location, none of which are matched by other locations in the region.”

Hammerson and Cine UK dealt directly.
