Plans for a £100m mixed-use development at Battery Park in Selly Oak, Birmingham, have been minded for approval.
The plans from Harvest Partnership, a joint venture between Land Securities and Sainsbury’s, for the 30-acre site which has been derelict for 30 years are minded for approval at a council planning meeting on Thursday.
A mixed-use retail and leisure destination is proposed, including a 171,000 sq ft replacement Sainsbury’s supermarket and petrol station, plus 163,000 sq ft of shops, 161,500 sq ft of student accommodation alongside 21,000 sq ft of leisure on 20 acres of land at Battery Park.
There will also be improvements to the existing canalside, with a new piazza-style square featuring a high-quality pub/restaurant, and a new bridge over the canal to provide improved access for pedestrians and cyclists, offering a direct link between the development and Selly Oak centre.
Meanwhile, Birmingham council in partnership with the University of Birmingham and the Queen Elizabeth hospital plan to bring forward a major 418,000 sq ft life sciences medical research campus on its 10 acres at Battery Park, which it bought from the Harvest Partnership last April for £10m.
Neil Carron, Land Securities project director, said: “We have worked extremely hard to ensure that our proposals are realistic and can accommodate a range of key features.”
Decontamination work will start in 2014, with building work starting on site in 2016. Practical completion is due in 2017.
