Waitrose John Lewis unveiled for Basingstoke

Plans have been drawn up for a 107,500 sq ft combined Waitrose and John Lewis Home store to anchor the first stage of a £200m regeneration project in Basingstoke, Hampshire.

Muse Developments has launched a consultation for the 107,500 sq ft store as part of its Basing View scheme with Basingstoke and Deane borough council.

A planning application will be submitted to the council following a public exhibition on 6-7 September, with the store’s opening targeted for 2015.

Basing View aims to create 650,000 sq ft of commercial-led development over 15 acres and will ultimately include new office space and a hotel.

Mike Auger, regional director at Muse, said: “If local people support our plans then we would hope to start work in spring next year, subject to securing planning permission.”

Nigel Keen, property director for the John Lewis Partnership, added: “This an important regeneration opportunity for Basingstoke, especially given its prominent location as a gateway to the town centre, and we are excited by the potential for us to make a lasting contribution to the town’s retail offer and local employment.

“We have a long-standing ambition to bring our brands to the area and we look forward to discussing our plans with local people.”
