Bargains to dominate high street

BCSC 2013: Bargain shops and discount food retailers are set to dominate the retail scene next year, according to the latest figures from EG Retail Research.

Five of the top 10 requirements for the year ahead are from value retailers, representing around 3.4m sq ft. At current take-up levels this would represent almost one fifth of all deals done in the 12 months to the end of June 2013.

B&M Bargains accounts for a third of all requirements, placing it at number one, with a stated aim of opening 50 stores of around 20,000 sq ft this year.

Lidl, Aldi, 99p store and Poundland all also feature in the top 10.

Value retailers prominence on the retail scene has grown strongly in the past five years. Pre recession, EG figures show value retailers made up just 1.9% of market share, in the12 months to the end of June 2008. That nearly doubled to 3.3% in the same period in 2013.

Fast food retailers are also forecast to continue with Burger King, Greggs, and KFC all making it into the top 15 retailers by requirements.
