Fortress Wapping presses ahead

Berkeley Group’s plans for the residential-led development of Fortress Wapping have been given approval by Tower Hamlets council.

The company’s subsidiary St George plans to build 1,800 homes at the former HQ of Rupert Murdoch’s UK newspapers in Wapping, E1.

The company bought the 15-acre former printworks in 2012 for £150m, before News UK’s move to The Place at London Bridge Quarter, SE1.

The Patel Taylor-designed proposals include more than 200,000 sq ft of commercial space.

Tower Hamlets requested the initial plans be revised to include a new secondary school.
