MIPIM: Birmingham city council and the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust have launched the sale of the 43-acre former Selly Oak Hospital, located in the south-west of the city.
The site already has outline consent for 650 homes; retail and office space could also be built there. The site previously housed a hospital that was decommissioned following the opening of the £500m Queen Elizabeth “super hospital” in 2010.
A masterplan for the area highlights the potential to create a new, sustainable neighbourhood. The site integrates fully into Bourneville and its conservation area at its southern end and to the life sciences and commercial opportunities of the regenerated Selly Oak to the north.
Eight locally-listed buildings will be retained and converted, including an 1870s workhouse and distinctive water tower.
Sir Albert Bore, leader of Birmingham city council, said: “This is one of the premier housing sites in the Midlands. The rare opportunity of a large brownfield site deep in the heart of an urban area, yet with a mature green setting next to a canal, is exciting the market.”
