Manchester consults on regen plans

Manchester city council has launched a consultation on an updated draft regeneration strategy for the Ancoats and New Islington areas.

The districts are to be among the first to be renovated by a new venture with the backers of Manchester City Football Club.

Estates Gazette revealed in March that the club’s Middle Eastern owners were in talks with the council to fund thousands of homes through up to £1bn of financial support.

Both neighbourhoods were to be developed in the 2008-2018 East Manchester strategic regeneration framework, but redevelopment was largely scuppered by the recession.

They now form a key part of the local authority’s plan to expand the city centre north and east over the next 15 years.

Up to 1,000 mixed homes will be built in the area as well as a new retail area including a supermarket and cinema complex in Great Ancoats Street.

Manchester city council’s executive member for housing and regeneration Jeff Smith said: “Ancoats and New Islington have been key regeneration objectives for the past 20 years. We have made great strides and some fantastic successes were achieved, but like many developments, these areas were hit by the recession.

“With signs of positive progress in both neighbourhoods, it is the right time to re-evaluate the strategy for Ancoats and New Islington and we urge local people to have their say on the future of their area.”

The consultation will remain open from 23 June to 22 July and the updated development framework will be considered by Manchester city council’s executive later this year.
