C&R to bolster UK mall portfolio

Capital & Regional is ?planning to add swiftly to its eight-strong portfolio of malls as it sets out its stall to become the UK’s dominant community shopping centre owner.

Chief executive Hugh Scott- Barrett said the firm, which on Wednesday won shareholder support for its takeover of the £705.2m Mall Fund, could take on “another three or four” schemes without having to add significantly to its existing platform.

It plans to target schemes ?in institutional or private ownership in off-market transactions.

The listed company, ?which will convert to a ?REIT later this year, also ?has a minimum of £76m earmarked to invest. It has identified a long list of asset ?management initiatives ?to drive performance ?from the six centres it will take full ownership of as part ?of the Mall transaction, alongside its two existing balance sheet assets.

It has been approached ?by high-end residential developers, and a link-up could see apartments being built as part of plans for proposed extensions at ?some of its London assets including the 428,000 sq ft The Mall, Wood Green ? and its 250,000 sq ft The Mall, Walthamstow.
