Stockport council has approved plans to build 950 homes at Woodford Aerodrome.
The 500-acre site in Greater Manchester is being revamped by a joint venture between Harrow Estates and Avro Heritage, which bought the site for £100m from BAE Systems in 2011.
The plans also include commercial space, retail areas and a primary school.
The proposal was approved during an extraordinary meeting of the council’s planning and highway committee.
After demolition of existing buildings later this year, the first phase will include 145 homes.
The entire project is expected to take nine years and include several additional planning applications.
