Higher stamp duty catches millions

The number of households being forced to pay higher stamp duty rates has more than doubled in the past decade.

Rising house prices mean that a quarter of buyers are paying duty of 3 percent or more up from just one in ten in 2003, say Savills.

Government figures also show that households paid more inheritance tax – £3.4bn – last year than at any point since 2008.
