Briefing: Baggies bag the planning premership

With the Premiership kicking off this week, Daniel Watney-commissioned research discovers which clubs make up property’s planning dream team

West Bromwich Albion has topped the property planning premiership, something the Baggies could only dream about on the pitch last season.

As the new Premier League season kicks off this week, research using DCLG figures shows what property’s fantasy football league would look like. Sandwell Metropolitan borough council, home to West Bromwich Albion, where developers last year won 95% or 1,006 commercial decisions, takes the top commercial property spot. It beats Burnley, in second place with 92% of its lean 290 decisions.

For pure volume of work, Aston Villa lifts the trophy for the number of non-residential decisions at more than 4,000, with developers winning nine out of 10 fixtures against the planners.

Including residential decisions, it is Everton and Liverpool that come out on top, saying yes to 95% of the 2,516 applications.

“It would be tempting to give Liverpool FC the top slot in the league table, not just for being pipped in last year’s Premiership, but also due to the massive redevelopment soon to begin around Anfield,” says Charles Mills, partner and head of planning at Daniel Watney. “The statistics show local authorities are taking a proactive stance towards planning and, while much has been made of localism stalling development, this snapshot shows the overall number of decisions granted has risen from 84% to 88% in the last 10 years.”
