Prime minister David Cameron has said that he would want interest rates to stay at rock bottom forever, saying it helped families to buy homes.
In recent weeks senior policymakers at the Bank of England have called for interest rates to stay lower for longer because wage prospects appear to have not recovered from the recession.
Cameron was keen to remind workers at the call centre in Runcorn, where he made the comments, that The Bank of England was ‘annoyingly’ independent and that his views would not sway its decisions.
