Manufacturers are racing to develop the next generation of elevators, which could lift people at record breaking speeds of 4,000 ft a minute.
The advances, say experts, will reduce potential bottlenecks and allow towers to be built ever taller. Faster lifts are seen as vital for the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, which will be 1km high.
