Birmingham City University sells City North Campus

Birmingham City University has sold a 3.5-acre former industrial site opposite the its City North Campus in Perry Barr, Birmingham, for redevelopment.

The deal marks the first disposal at the university’s City North Campus, from which it will vacate to move to the city’s Eastside regeneration zone. BCU has signed a £1.7m deal with free school operator the Tauheedul Free School Trust for a new school to be built on the site which will serve the Perry Bar area.

The deal with the school was conditional upon Tauheedul Free School Trust first obtaining planning permission for the development of the site.

The university’s decision to sell the land follows a strategic revision of its assets and new development including major investment in Birmingham’s Eastside area at the Parkside Building, next to the City Park, which was opened in 2013 and the bespoke £62m Curzon Building which is due for completion in 2015.

Graham Rhodes, director of estates at BCU, said: “The sale of this industrial land to the Tauheedul Free School Trust means a disused site will now be developed in a way that will benefit generations of young people and their families.”

GVA advised the BCU on the deal. Earlier this year, the BCU relocated a number of the university’s functions to the former New Technology Institute building in Eastside, which was at that time the largest office deal of the year.
