Germany’s answer to the Leaning Tower of Pisa is to be saved from collapse after Angela Merkel’s government pledged €950,000 to its rescue.
The Leaning Tower of Bad Frankenhausen is claimed to be the tallest leaning structure in Europe – at 183ft 8ins it is almost 5 inches taller than its Pisa partner. It also has a more pronounced list, being 15ft from the vertical, while Pisa is a mere 12ft 10ins following restoration work. The tower was scheduled for demolition in 2011, but the town bought it for a token €1 and now the german federal government has agreed to shore up the foundations with a steel corset.
