Brownfield could supply 1m homes

A comprehensive study of England’s brownfield sites has shown that around 1m homes could be built with the need for concreting the countryside.

The study, by the University of the West of England and the Campaign to Protect Rural England found that a minimum of 976,000 homes could be built on identified brownfield sites. However, they added that the figure was an underestimate, as it did not include underused land, such as carparks. Nearly half of the identified space was in the South East, the east of England and London, which alone could accommodate 146,000 homes.

More than 400,000 homes could be built quickly on brownfield land which already has either detailed or outlined planning permission. Another 550,000 could be built on “suitable vacant or derelict land”.
