A committee of MPs is recommending that schools, hospitals and care homes should not be sited near main roads, in an attempt to limit the impact of air pollution.
The Commons environmental audit committee recommends among other things that schools near main roads be fitted with air-filtration systems, that diesel engines be eliminated, and that planners and road builders take air pollution into greater account.
The MPs criticise the government for not acting on earlier warnings, and say it has consistently failed to meet European Union air quality targets.
