U.S. House passes spending bill
The U.S. House of Representatives passed a $1.1 trillion spending bill late Thursday, just hours ahead of a deadline, averting a government shutdown.
The House voted by 219 to 206 to pass the bill.
The Senate will in turn clear a short-term funding bill later in the day, followed by a long-term bill.

China’s monetary policy to focus on balance
China’s government has room to maneuver given that growth is exhibiting resilience and potential, according to the summary of the recently ended policy-setting Central Economic Work Conference by the official Xinhua News Agency.
Xinhua’s statement didn’t specify growth rates for the economy, but emphasized that slower growth was the new normal.
Monetary policy will focus on a balance between tightening and loosening, it said.
