U.K. councils buying back houses

Councils are buying back houses previously sold under the right-to-buy scheme as they battle a shortage of social housing.

Some 20,000 homes have been sold under the scheme since 2012, but only 5,000 new homes have been built during the same period.

At least nine authorities are repurchasing homes previously sold at a discount, while many others are interested in a buy-back policy. The homes being purchased in this manner are being bought at a loss to the council.
