John Lewis department store reported a 5.8% fall in sales in the week to Saturday, compounding week-earlier falls of 10.6%.
The falls contrast sharply with gains made in the final week of November, when customers took advantage of discounts offered as stores in the U.K. looked to emulate the tradition of Black Friday in the U.S.
Andrew Murphy, the store’s retail director, noted “you can’t hit that height and not believe you are pulling forward some” sales.
