Public sector spending on public asset maintenance has never worked, according to Daniel Moylan, the chairman of the mayor’s design advisory group.
Speaking at a New London Architecture debate in the Leadenhall Building, Moylan said: “We need to think about new ways to fund public space because the public sector never has the funds to maintain anything.”
He added: “Public space is no longer a force for civilisation but has inevitably become linked to economic activity.”
Sarah Gaventa, founder of Made Public, agreed, saying: “Privately owned public spaces are here to stay.”
