Fourteen trophies to fight for in the 2015 Property Marketing Awards

The Property Marketing Awards are back. Now in its 23rd year, this prestigious event, organised by the Worshipful Company of Chartered Surveyors, in partnership with Estates Gazette, is once again open for entries.

The PMAs celebrate the very best, most effective, innovative and creative marketing campaigns from the UK property industry. There are 14 accolades up for grabs, with a new category this year for place-based marketing companies. The Grand Prix Award is given to the best entry overall.

Leading the judges is Kevin Duncan, marketing guru and author of books Marketing Greatest Hits and The Dictionary of Business Bullshit.

Duncan urged entrants to showcase their best work by “avoiding meaningless percentages” and demonstrating the success of a campaign with hard facts.

“The use of mobile devices, social media and other advanced technologies has opened up a whole world of possibilities for the marketer to embrace, and so we hope to see more digital campaigns being entered this year,” he said. “A campaign that appears online isn’t necessarily a digital campaign.”

The competition is open to businesses including creative agencies, property firms, developers, surveying practices, property advisers, local authorities, development authorities and consultants, across all sectors and regions.

Proceeds from the awards support the Chartered Surveyors Training Trust, which provides a pathway into property surveying for disadvantaged but talented youngsters.

Funding strategies for UK infrastructure

Infrastructure minister Lord Deighton KBE attracted property’s finest to the latest Cambridge University Land Society Whitehall Lecture.

He spoke about creative funding strategies for the UK, under the title “Infrastructure in the 21st century: from the Olympics to high-speed rail and beyond”, leaving the gathering with plenty to talk about over refreshments.

The CULS hosted the event at Linklaters’ headquarters in Silk Street, EC2. It was the second of a series, with Kate Barker CBE following on 30 April with a lecture on UK housing policy.

recently launched investment fund for infrastructure.

In grandfather’s footsteps

Miles Skinner is preparing to embark on the enormous challenge of running the equivalent of 10 marathons in seven days through the Italian countryside where his grandfather took refuge during the Second World War.

The CBRE agent is taking on a debt of gratitude from his grandfather to those who risked their lives by hiding and feeding him along with other escaped prisoners. Skinner will run 420km (262 miles) across the Tuscan Hills, from Lucca to St Peter’s Square in Rome, raising money for the Monte San Martino Trust. The charity celebrates heroic Italians, and in their honour awards bursaries to descendants of the villagers who assisted the PoWs to study at English-language schools in London and Oxford.

Skinner’s grandfather ended up in the hills after escaping from a prisoner of war camp in Sulmona. He was eventually recaptured, but while waiting to be taken to Germany he was injured during an Allied bombing raid and hospitalised. He fled the hospital and became a free man.

The soldier eventually married the sister of a comrade who died beside him during the bombings and they were to become Skinner’s grandparents. They have now died, leaving him determined to take on a sizeable physical challenge with a connection to Italy.

Vertical Rush at Tower 42

Celebrity architect George Clarke and property’s keenest stair-climbers will power up to the top floor of Tower 42, EC2, next month for Vertical Rush.

Some 1,000 runners are expected to summit the City skyscraper on Tuesday 3 March, via 42 flights of stairs, in what is considered the UK’s tallest, toughest tower-running challenge.

The event will raise money for housing and homelessness charity Shelter. The charity hopes to raise £360,000 to support its emergency helpline, following a record rise in calls recently from people on the brink of street living.

Shelter chief executive Campbell Robb said: “As the capital’s chronic shortage of affordable homes continues to push rents sky high, it is getting harder and harder for families to keep a roof over their heads. And when the worst happens, Shelter is often the only place where people can turn for help.”

You can compete in Vertical Rush individually or as part of a team. Runners will start in hourly waves from 7.30am to 4.30pm.

• CBRE has committed to raising money for Shelter over the next two years in a £250,000 fundraising partnership.
