The shadow housing minister has slammed the Conservatives’ starter homes plan.

At a Politics of Property debate sponsored by Deverell Smith, Emma Reynolds MP asked: “Who will build the roads and infrastructure without Section 106 and CIL in place?”

John Glen, parliamentary private secretary and stand-in for Brandon Lewis, was unable to answer. He also conceded that the scheme could result in house prices being artificially inflated, as had happened with the help to buy scheme.

Former Conservative MP Steven Norris agreed that the help to buy scheme had raised the price of homes, particularly in London.

Debate chair Peter Bill said these types of schemes presented opportunities for people to “game the system” and that politicians should beware of the unintended consequences of their actions.
