Broxbourne council in Hertfordshire has kicked off the search for a partner to redevelop the 10-acre site that has housed Tesco’s headquarters since the 1970s.
The authority held initial discussions with developers at the MIPIM property conference in Cannes this week ahead of the publication of its local plan later this year.
Broxbourne is working with Tesco to find a solution for the Delamare Road site in Cheshunt on which it hopes to develop new commercial space in an attempt to keep employment in the area.
The talks follow the announcement by Tesco earlier this year that it planned to quit its Cheshunt home in favour of consolidating staff in Welwyn Garden City in 2016.
Tesco owns the majority of the site but is working with the council and is expected to agree to a sale if a suitable party comes forward.
The council’s group manager (economic development), Greg Macdonald, said some residential use would also be considered but creating economic activity remained the priority.
Delamare Road comprises five separate sites including the 111,353 sq ft office block New Tesco House, which sits on a 2.5-acre site.
The 56,392 sq ft Old Tesco House partially occupies a separate 5.8-acre site, while a data centre, a Tesco resource centre and a further office block called Heldrew House account for the remainder of the site.
