Wandsworth reveals Nine Elms bridge contest shortlist

Wandsworth council has selected four design teams to reach the second stage of the Nine Elms to Pimlico bridge competition.

The high-profile contest attracted 74 entries with each team submitting a rival proposal for a new pedestrian and cycle link across the Thames.

The successful teams are :

• BuroHappold Limited – with Marks Barfield Architects, J&L Gibbons Landscape Architects, Gardiner & Theobald

• Bystrup Architecture Design and Engineering – with Robin Snell & Partners, Svend Ole Hansen ApS, Aarsleff and ÅF Lighting

• Ove Arup & Partners – with AL_A, Gross Max, Equals Consulting and Movement Strategies

• Ove Arup & Partners – with Hopkins Architects and Grant Associates

The next stage of the competition will see the shortlisted teams develop their initial ideas into detailed designs.

Wandsworth council expects to announce the winning team in the autumn. A new bridge would require planning permission before it could be built.

A £26m contribution has been identified from the development of Nine Elms and the new design would be used to lever-in further funding.

Union Street Partners partner Jules Hind said: “The four short-listed designs for the Nine Elms Bridge design competition both underline the high-quality of entries and what an exciting new landmark for London this link can become.

“Traditionally London’s development has been lateral, with office development and occupier demand concentrated in the old centres of the West End and the City. Now, we see a ‘technological and creative spine’ emerging, in the very centre of London, from Battersea Power Station across to Elephant & Castle and up through to King’s Cross.”
