Westminster city council last night granted planning permission for a £120m redevelopment of the London School of Economics and Political Science campus in Midtown.
Plans include 211,000 sq ft of new academic buildings arranged around a public square, comprising a two-level basement and a stepped building rising to 13 storeys.
The core of the existing St Clements building will also be extended by seven storeys.
Matt Humpheys associate director at Turley, which advised on planning, said: “This scheme is the largest project in the LSE’s 120-year history and creates a terrific new public square supported by world-class architecture.”
The redevelopment involves the demolition of the existing LSE-owned buildings along Houghton Street, known as Clare Market, The Anchorage, the East Building and part of St Clements.
Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners was selected to design the scheme following an RIBA competition held in 2013. Demolition is due to begin at the start of the summer, with completion scheduled for late 2018.
