Since 2010 the government has exited 2,018 buildings, the equivalent of one a day, as part of the rationalisation of its estate.
The figures were revealed alongside the announcement that the government had identified £11bn of savings for the next financial year to January 2015.
New cost-saving initiatives include recruiting 25 new commercial experts to get better deals from supplier contracts and improving commercial capability across the civil service, and reviewing telecoms and digital infrastructure to enhance connectivity.
Minister for the Cabinet Office Francis Maude said: “We have worked from day one to make savings from the running of Whitehall. I am delighted to confirm that we are on track to exceed our target of saving £20bn for this financial year.”
