HMRC tops list of government space disposals

Houses-of-Parliament-Westminster-THUMB.gifIN NUMBERS: Three departments are delivering half of all space cuts made across government.

Last year HM Revenue & Customs, the government’s Operational Research department, and the Department for Work and Pensions shed 2.4m sq ft of space against total government savings of 4.6m sq ft.

UK Export and Finance shrank the most, by 85%, although in real terms HMRC lost the most space at 850,000 sq ft.

In total, 53 of the 133 departments not disbanded or rolled into another department decreased their space, according to the government’s State of the Estate report.

The majority of departments (60) saw no change at all, while 20 grew their estates.
