High-rise living on the up in Manchester

The number of residential towers on Manchester’s skyline is set to almost double as developers back the city to be the  northern powerhouse.

In total 12 towers are currently in the pipeline, representing 4,450 homes, against a standing stock of 18 existing residential towers, according to research from JLL. Numbers have risen as developers scramble to meet growing housing demand, with the city’s population expected to grow by 20% over the next 20 years.

Just two other residential towers are planned in the major regions, both in Birmingham, providing 500 flats.

London remains the powerhouse of high-rise living, with a record number of towers planned for the capital. In total, 121 residential towers are in the pipeline, which will raise the city’s total to more than 330 towers.

“London is the largest it has ever been in its history – and as long as the green belt remains sacrosanct, realistically the only way to meet rising population demand is to build upwards,” said Adam Challis, UK head of residential research at JLL.

“Manchester is the only other city that can realistically follow suit,” he added.
