Sainsbury’s has submitted plans to demolish its supermarket and car park in Whitechapel, E1, to build a 608-flat mixed-used scheme.
The project would include a 121,000 sq ft replacement store, including an “explore learning” resource facility.
Sainsbury’s hopes to capitalise on the nearby Crossrail station being built at Whitechapel after the transport project claimed about half the supermarket’s land for a ventilation shaft.
The site at 1 Cambridge Heath Road would consist of 522 -private homes, 60 homes for social rent, and the balance intermediate homes.
The UNIT Architects- designed project would feature eight blocks of up to 33 storeys on a site spanning nearly eight acres.
The blocks would provide one- to three-bedroom flats, duplexes and townhouses, as well as public realm improvements, cafés and restaurants.
Turley is advising on planning. Knight Frank is the development adviser.
