Osborne to launch Cities Devolution bill

Chancellor George Osborne will offer major cities in England the chance to follow Manchester in gaining new devolved powers, providing they agree to having an elected mayor.

While Manchester has chosen to go with the idea of an elected mayor, other cities – such as Leeds and Sheffield – have not been as keen on the idea. The level of powers that have been offered to those other areas has trailed behind those granted to Manchester.

The powers that could be transferred as part of the Cities Devolution bill include healthcare, housing and transport.
