Clive Dutton OBE dies

clive-dutton-THUMB-.jpegClive Dutton OBE, the former Olympic regeneration chief and director of planning and regeneration at Birmingham council, has died.

Dutton passed away on Saturday, aged 62, after a battle with cancer.

He retired as Newham council regeneration chief in May 2013 and had been working as a consultant in Belfast and London. In Belfast, Dutton was helping the Northern Irish Development Agency to accelerate the regeneration of the city’s Gaeltacht Quarter.

Prior to this, he joined Newham council in September 2009 where he oversaw the Stratford metropolitan masterplan for the regeneration of the Stratford area including the existing town centre, Westfield Stratford City and the Olympic site after the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Dutton relocated to London after spending a number of years in Birmingham as director of planning and regeneration, a newly created role to which he was appointed in February 2005 with the aim of bringing together the planning and economic development departments under one umbrella.

In Birmingham, Dutton is best known for legacy projects including the £650m redevelopment of New Street station, which will complete this autumn, the £190m Library of Birmingham and kick-starting the city’s Big City Plan, a 20-year vision focusing on regeneration across a 2,000-acre swathe of the city centre.

Waheed Nazir, who worked closely with Dutton while at Birmingham council, and was appointed to the role of head of planning and regeneration when Dutton moved to Newham council, said: “Clive transformed Birmingham and helped shape me personally. He was a great visionary, leader and mentor who will be very much missed by all those that knew him.”
