Green light for Birmingham student digs

54 George Road Birmingham

Calthorpe Estates has won consent to build a new student housing scheme in Birmingham.

Located at 54 George Road, close to Five Ways station, plans for a mixed-use, six-storey building have been given the green light by Birmingham city council planners.

The scheme comprises 50 bedrooms, made up of 20 studio flats and 30 one-bedroom flats arranged in suites of six around shared living space. Plans also include 2,771 sq ft of ground floor retail space, creating an active frontage onto George Road.

Calthorpe aims to increase the student use offer diversification of its core commercial property portfolio with the new Glancy Nicholls Architects-designed scheme.

Ralph Minott, director of development at Calthorpe Estates, said: “The vision for 54 George Road is to breathe new life into a prominent city centre site which has lain vacant for some 15 years, while also helping to meet the growing demand for high specification accommodation among Birmingham’s growing student population – the largest in the UK outside London.”

Work is due to start on site early in 2016 with completion expected for the start of the academic year in September 2017.

Strategically, the site complements Calthorpe’s 1,500-acre Edgbaston estate and is positioned at a gateway to The Village, Edgbaston, an area of the estate which is currently undergoing a transformation into a new urban village.
