NI Assembly investigates NAMA portfolio sale

Nama-THUMB.jpegThe Northern Ireland Assembly’s finance committee is to hold an emergency meeting today to investigate improper payments made during the sale of NAMA’s Project Eagle portfolio.

The portfolio of €4.5bn (£3.2bn) of loans relating to property in Northern Ireland was bought by Cerberus for €1.5bn in 2014.

The committee has been set up following statements by Irish politician Mick Wallace that during the deal £7m was earmarked for a Northern Irish politician.

The money was initially paid to Belfast solicitor firm Tughans, which states it advised on the deal. It was then transferred to an account in the Isle of Man of which Ian Coulter, managing partner at the company, was sole beneficiary. The money was retrieved by Tughans and Coulter has since left the company.

The committee is to hear evidence from interested parties next week and Daithi McKay, the Sinn Féin chairman of the committee, wishes to see representatives from NAMA, Cerberus and Tughans.
