The International Council on Monuments and Sites, which acts as an adviser to Unesco, has added its voice to those opposing the Woodstock East development on land owned by the Blenheim Palace estate.
Icomos-UK’s chairman, Peter Marsden, said plans to build 1,200 new homes on the estate’s land would change the character of the town and harm the setting of Blenheim Palace, a World Heritage Site.
A spokesman for the project said the sale of the land would realise £40m for Blenheim Estate, enabling it to carry out maintenance work on Blenheim Palace.
The developer on the project is Pye Homes.
