Housing minister Brandon Lewis is set to announce a target of one million new homes by the end of the current parliament, in a documentary due to be shown on television this evening.
In order to achieve that target, some 200,000 homes would have to be built each year, well above the 124,520 that were built in the 2014-15 fiscal year.
The government has so far avoided setting specific targets, and it is thought that that is still its position.
