Tom Bloxham’s Urban Splash and Places for People have been selected as development partners for the £250m Icknield Port Loop project.
The joint venture was selected ahead of GenR8 for the mixed- use project on brownfield land near Edgbaston reservoir, Birmingham. The site is owned by Birmingham city council and the Canal & River Trust.
Urban Splash and Places will take a 50% share in a limited liability partnership with the landowners, to bring forward the 43-acre site.
Plans include 1,150 homes plus commercial space and community facilities.
Icknield Port Loop sits within the area covered by the Greater Icknield Masterplan, part of the draft Birmingham Development Plan, which includes the delivery of 3,000 homes by 2031.
Sir Albert Bore, leader of Birmingham city council, said the project would act as a catalyst for Ladywood and the greater Icknield area and had the potential to unlock further major regeneration.
The appointment is a coup for Urban Splash, which completed a major restructuring last year, refinancing £135m of loans issued by Co-operative Bank, Blackstone, HSBC and RBS as part of a new joint venture agreement with the Pears Group.
Urban Splash director Nathan Cornish said: “We are looking forward to building on Urban Splash’s experience in developing waterside sites in places including New Islington in Manchester and Royal William Yard in Plymouth to turn this into one of Birmingham’s best residential locations.”
Savills is advising Birmingham council and the Canal & River Trust on the project.
