Mayor overturns BL Putney refusal

British-Land-Putney-development-THUMBLondon mayor Boris Johnson has used his powers to approve a British Land residential scheme in Putney which was previously thrown out by Wandsworth council.

BL submitted plans for a mixed-use redevelopment of 56-70 Putney High Street, SW15, comprising 97 homes, 78 of which would be private market with 19 affordable housing units.

The six-storey building, with a partial seventh-storey on Felsham Road, will also include 34,000 sq ft of commercial space, 4,800 sq ft of assembly and leisure use, and 26 basement parking spaces.

Wandsworth council rejected the application on July 14, citing its height, design and existing high pollution levels as reasons for refusal.

But Johnson overruled the decision this morning using his mayoral powers to intervene on a development if a proposed development is deemed to have a “significant impact on the implementation of the London Plan”, a “significant effect on more than one borough” and “there are sound planning reasons for the mayor to intervene”.
