Liverpool city council has moved to buy a three-acre site behind Exchange Station from the Homes and Communities Agency for a 350,000 sq ft office scheme.
The site behind the former train station is currently used as a car park and public realm, but the council’s executive has said its city centre location would be suitable for “high-end offices”.
The cabinet has approved proposals to acquire the site for an undisclosed sum and invest money secured from the Regional Growth Fund to mitigate underground structural issues before procuring a developer.
Malcolm Kennedy, council cabinet member for regeneration, transport and climate change, said developers were already getting in touch to express interest.
Exchange Station, the former railway station building converted into 193,000 sq ft of offices, is currently under offer to Commercial Estates Group for about £12m.
