Lambeth council, Brixton Green and Ovalhouse Theatre have received planning consent for a 4.2-acre mixed-use regeneration scheme in Somerleyton Road, SW9.
The partnership plans to build 304 homes for rent by local people, community facilities, shops, a nursery and a new purpose-built theatre for Ovalhouse.
Lambeth council, which owns the majority of the land, is choosing to act as its own developer and said it would focus on building affordable homes and prioritise creating a “thriving local community” over profit.
Brixton Green is a community organisation set up by local people to develop the Somerleyton Road site.
Igloo has been appointed as development manager for the scheme, on which work is due to start in early 2016.
