Campaigners claim victory in fight to save terraced houses in Liverpool

Liverpool City Council has decided not to proceed with a challenge to a decision by the then communities secretary, Eric Pickles, to refuse planning permission to demolish 300 Victorian terraced houses and replace them with modern homes.

The site, known as the Welsh Streets, includes the birthplace of Ringo Starr, although that house was not due to be demolished.

The council had planned that a housing association would build new homes on the site. While campaigners are claiming victory in the dispute, the council says it will not be refurbishing the existing homes but instead would resubmit a similar proposal.
