PM denies north-south divide on flood-defence spending

Prime minister David Cameron has denied a north-south divide with regard to flood protection, saying during a visit to flood-stricken York that the level of spending on flood defences in the north was higher than in the south.

Cameron pledged increased spending on flood defences in Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire.

David Rooke of the Environment Agency called for a complete rethink, including building homes with solid floors, waterproof plaster and electrics higher up walls.

KPMG has estimated that the flood damage could total £5bn, including insurance claims of £1.5bn.
