Housing zones around the country have been allocated nearly £6.3m to help prepare brownfield sites for the delivery of up to 45,000 homes for families and first-time buyers.

The government funding, which comes on top of a £1.2bn Starter Home Fund to prepare brownfield land for at least 30,000 homes, is intended to help speed up development.

Councils overseeing 19 housing zones have been allocated a total of £5.5m, with grants ranging from £30,000 to £700,000.

The remaining £740,000 from the fund will be used to provide specialist technical support to the zones.

The government has committed to working with a shortlist of eight further potential zones.

Together, the government estimated the zones have the potential to deliver 45,000 homes through partnerships between councils and developers.

Housing minister Brandon Lewis said: “Housing zones offer enormous potential to use brownfield land for new homes, which is why this government is determined to get them built out as soon as possible.

“This funding will play an important part in getting work underway which will lead to new homes and more security for aspiring homeowners.”
