Green light for ferry terminal unlocks Royal Pier

Royal-Pier-THUMB.jpegA £450m plan to redevelop Southampton’s Royal Pier has taken a step forward after a proposal for a new ferry terminal was given the go-ahead.

The £33.5m plan to move the current Red Funnel terminal to a 22,851 sq ft site in Trafalgar Dock frees space for the wider scheme and work is expected to start later this year.

RPW (Southampton)’s planning application for the Royal Pier development is currently being considered by officials.

If approved, the long-neglected pier site, which has been wrecked in two fires, will be redeveloped into 500,000 sq ft of offices along with restaurants, shops and 730 homes.

The site could also contain a casino, five-star hotel, spa and parking.

Under the scheme, which involves reclaiming land from the River Test, Mayflower Park would also be expanded and 10,000 jobs could be created.
