Swansea Council has selected development partners for a pair of sites which were once at the heart of a £1bn city centre regeneration project backed by Hammerson and Urban Splash.
Rivington Land has been appointed as the council’s development partner for the 16-acre St David’s and Oystermouth site where it plans to build 200,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space and a 3,500-seat arena.
Separately, Trebor Developments has won a tender process to partner the council on the 20-acre Civic Centre site at Oystermouth Road which fronts Swansea Bay.
Trebor’s plans envisage a “city waterfront” which will include a visitor attraction, public square, beach, research hub, tourist facilities, flats and restaurants.
The scheme has an anticipated gross development value of £150m.
Hammerson and Urban Splash were originally selected for the wider Swansea regeneration project in 2008.
Urban Splash pulled out of the scheme the following year when the residential element was dropped. Hammerson and the council consensually parted ways in 2013.
The council launched an OJEU process to find new partners for the sites at the start of last year.
Swansea council leader Rob Stewart said: “The Civic Centre site has been recommended as the number one site of Welsh national priority status in a report produced for the Swansea Bay City Region board, so its regeneration is of strategic importance not just to Swansea, but to Wales as a whole.”
Other shortlisted bidders for the sites included a Bellerophon BPL-fronted consortium of M&G, Dawnus Construction, SSE and Apollo; Queensberry Real Estate; and a Rightacre and Exemplar joint venture.
