Westminster schemes to take wing

approval-stamp-generic-THUMB.jpegWestminster Council has approved five schemes, including a Crown Estate proposal for St James’s.

The Crown Estate has been granted permission to demolish a St James’s block to make way for a seven-storey mixed-use scheme.

The plan outlines the demolition of two unlisted buildings, at 77-79 Jermyn Street, SW1, and 34-36 Duke Street, SW1, which adjoin on the first floor. In their place will stand a retail and office building with basement levels.

The current six-storey building on Jermyn Street dates from the 1920s and includes ground-level shops, a pub in the basement and offices on the upper levels.

The five-storey Duke Street building suffered bomb damage in the second world war and has been almost entirely rebuilt. It currently houses an art gallery, a restaurant and offices.

Genting UK also received permission to demolish the Park Lane Mews Hotel; 37 Hertford Street, W1; 16 Stanhope Row, W1; and 16-17 Market Mews, W1; and replace them with a 29-room hotel, a casino and 13 flats.

Planning officials also approved Gerald Eve’s application to demolish 32-34 Great Peter Street, SW1, and redevelop the site to provide a  21-flat block, as well as Lodha’s proposed redevelopment of Macdonald House, 1-3 Grosvenor Square, W1, to provide up to 46 flats.

Regal Homes secured permission to develop the old Royal Mail sorting office at St Johns Wood, 30 Lodge Road, NW8, into 49 flats.
