The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills has announced plans to close its Sheffield office by 2018.
The office is the department’s largest outside London and the decision is being viewed as a setback to the chancellor’s northern powerhouse policy.
The move comes as the department announced it would create a combined central headquarters and policy centre in London.
