Alton Estate to get £500m extension

Alton-Estate-SW15Wandsworth Council has launched a search for a regeneration partner to undertake a £500m expansion of one of the largest council estates in London.

Described by Lord Richard Rogers as one of the “best examples of public housing anywhere in the world”, the Alton Estate in Roehampton, SW15, currently houses more than 7,000 people across more than 100 buildings.

Situated on the corner of Richmond Park, the estate’s 11-storey towers sit alongside Grade II listed blocks inspired by French brutalist architect Corbusier, and bungalows for the elderly.

Bilfinger GVA has been appointed to lead the search for a partner to replace 290 flats over a 17-acre area with 1,400 homes.

Bilfinger GVA said that each affected council tenant and owner-occupier would be offered a new property on the estate so the existing community can stay in place.

Wandsworth Council leader Ravi Govindia said: “This project will preserve the best qualities of this unique post-war housing estate while unlocking its full potential as a thriving mixed-use neighbourhood with a superb range of local services and shops.

“It has the potential to provide hundreds of new homes, including high-quality social rent and affordable properties our local residents need.”

The regeneration will also include the provision of new shops and community facilities, including a leisure centre, community centre, park and library.

The scale and ownership of the wider estate is diverse. Of the 1,883 homes that were under council ownership, 40% have now been sold through the Right to Buy scheme.
